Panchayat

A Panchayat is a collective body of elected representatives responsible for administering the affairs of Panchayati Raj institutions. In the case of a Grama Panchayat, it is the principal governing body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and manages the day-to-day administration of the local area. The main components of a Panchayat are: President: The head of the Panchayat who presides over meetings and oversees its overall functioning. Vice President: Assumes responsibilities in the absence of the President. Ward Members: Elected representatives chosen from each ward of the Panchayat. Standing Committees: Sub-committees formed to facilitate decision-making and administration in areas such as finance, development, welfare, health, and education.

History

Kuttanad Taluk, comprising 12 panchayats, lies to the east of Alappuzha Municipality in Alappuzha District. Nedumudi is an extensive region situated roughly in the central part of the western edge of this taluk, surrounded by the distributaries of the Pamba River. It is believed that, as a result of prehistoric geological upheavals or conditions caused by sea incursions, this area transformed into a marshy lowland lying about 2.5 metres below sea level.
